The middle school is a unique age in the development of the parent and student relationship. The students are looking for some independence and many parents are ready to give their children some more freedom, but it is also a time when they desperately need to have more parent involvement than they ask for. The Freeport Middle School would like to see as many parents involved as possible.
The Freeport Middle School PTC ‘s primary endeavor is to provide sustained, reliable funding for experiential, field-based learning opportunities that enhance academic programming . Secondarily, the organization is striving to facilitate parental understanding of and participation in the educational process through a variety of communication and outreach strategies. Through volunteerism, resource coordination and fundraising projects, we support a positive and progressive school atmosphere.
All parents/guardians and teachers of Freeport Middle School students are invited to participate either intermittently or on an ongoing basis in the many activities hosted by this group. Regular meetings will take place at FMS on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30. These are organized opportunities for parents/guardians and staff members to exchange ideas and collaboratively develop both short/long term goals that effectively support the practical teaching and learning environment.
Monthly agendas to be published in the school newsletters and on the school website will include organizational business for upcoming events, reporting from subcommittees, as well as informational forums. Please join us whenever possible, or provide your input anytime via email to groganr@rsu5.org, kristendorsey62@gmail.com, or pruprech@maine.rr.com. We will publish meeting minutes as well, so that you can keep updated and informed. This is an inclusive group which seeks to benefit our students and teachers by accessing the diverse ideas, talents, expertise and volunteer spirit within the school community.
New projects this year include: *A School Events Calendar featuring student artwork * A School Directory of student names and parent email addresses for those wishing to participate * An online Parent/Staff Survey (see questions below) to assess perceived needs, available resources, and priorities * Informational Forums for parents/guardians to understand and effectively address the social, cognitive, developmental, and academic issues that impact middle school students * A Book Fair to be supplied by a local bookshop, taking place during November conferences.
Ongoing Projects include: *The Magazine Drive which begins September 9th, and is currently our most successful fundraiser. The proceeds exclusively support curricular field trip opportunities for all students * Student Friday Night Socials, coordinated this year by Lynn Shea.
We hope to increase involvement in the work of the PTC through responsiveness to parent and staff feedback, by expanding accessibility to relevant information, as well as extending a variety of opportunities for the school community to be contributing and informed participants. To assist in these efforts, please consider the following Survey questions and respond at (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6CH8DJ9). We have placed this link on the FMS homepage. Also review the attached Committee Structure, which will be part of the survey, to help you decide how to effectively contribute your individual talents, interests, and time to Freeport Middle School.
